Two contract workers, who were working at a leather unit in Ranipet to clean a sludge tank in the pre-treatment system inside its premises, died due asphyxiation on August 18. A third worker, who tried to rescue the two workers, was rushed to a hospital in Vellore for treatment.

Following the death of the pair, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (PCB) has initiated action against Veera Leather Exports, a leather tannery at SIDCO industrial estate in Ranipet. District environmental engineer Kamaraj said a team led by the joint chief environmental engineer from Vellore had inspected the unit and held an enquiry on August 19. A report would be submitted to the headquarters at Chennai for suitable action, Kamaraj said.

Kamaraj said the PCB had instructed the leather units to use machines to clean tanks. They had also been advised to inform the CETPs and the PCB before cleaning tanks, which this particular unit had not followed.
