US fashion house Ralph Lauren never comments on its sales figures, but yesterday evening sources confirmed that it had generated record sales thanks to the number of Ricky Bags that had been sold. The high-end fashion guru had organised a top-notch event for the rich and famous at its Amsterdam premises, where it gifted its famous Ricky Bag to the Netherlands Museum of Bags and Purses.
The Ricky Bag is available from €1950, but yesterday, it was the exotic crocodile skin versions that were selling like hotcakes at €22,000 a piece. The Ricky Bag, named after Ralph Lauren’s wife, is regarded in the fashion world as an icon of classic elegance and style, on a par with the Birkin by Hermes and the 2.55 by Chanel. The famous US designer seems to have set a trend that will place Amsterdam squarely on the map for luxury goods in the European market.
But the company had even more in store: the guests were treated to a ‘first’ in the form of the ‘Ricky Bag with Light’ – a handbag with a USB port for charging your mobile phone, and LED lighting to illuminate the inside. The new version will not become available worldwide until December – and only on order.
