The Center for Life Institute (ICV), JBS and a group of organisations has launched the New Farming Program. The project's goal is to promote sustainability on cattle farms in the Amazon, improve their economic, social and environmental importance, help reduce deforestation, protect and recover natural resources, strengthening the local economy.
The New Farming Program is the result of a pilot project that began in 2012 and achieved very positive results. It reduced cattle processing ages from 44 to 36 months for males and 34 to 26 months for females, achieving a 155% increase in productivity, from 4.7 to over 12 arrobas* (1 arroba = 15kg) per hectare per year and improving both the quality of meat and farmer incomes.
The project integrated farm management, with progressive adoption of Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa) Best Farming Practices (BFP) for Beef Cattle. New Farming will be implemented in the Alta Floresta region of Mato Gross, which includes the cities of Carlinda, Paranaíta, Nova Monte Verde, Nova Bandeirantes and Apiacás, as well as Cotriguaçu, in the northwest of the state.
