A group of Brazilian tanners are spearheading a special design event in Italy. From April 14-May 25, the Brazilian leather sector design concept, Design na Pele is being presented at an exhibition taking place at the Università Degli Studi Di Milano.

The exhibition titled “Brazil S/A” runs under a central theme: ‘Escritas’ (Writings). Twelve participating tanneries have created leathers under one common theme using Brazilian historical and cultural elements in order to tell stories.

In its first week, Design na Pele has attracted designers and fashion stylists from Brazil, Italy, France, Mexico, and Poland. During the first week of Brazil S/A the project welcomed a well-known visitor, the contemporary design icon Philippe Starck.

Design na Pele is part of Brazilian Leather – a sectorial project focused on the international promotion of leather produced in Brazil, coordinated by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB) in partnership with Apex-Brasil (the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency).

Creative challenge

The project takes renowned designers into Brazilian tanneries in order to challenge them to explore the possibilities of the material leather, as well as its creative capacity. Celebrated fashion stylist Ronaldo Fraga and Heloísa Crocco, have helped tanners with their Design na Pele collections.

Brazilian leathers will be on show at the Università Degli Studi Di Milano until May 25.
