Exports of Portuguese finished leather goods have increased fourfold between 2009 and 2014.
Total exports of finished leather goods have risen from €36 million to €124 in five years, between 2009 and 2014; an impressive 294% increase. Export sales have increased 5.5% in the first semester of 2015.
According to APPICAPS (the Portuguese Association of Manufacturers of Footwear, Components, Leather Goods and Associated Articles), the sector is relatively small with about 100 companies employing around 1,000 people, but some of them have chosen to develop an international strategy by focusing on value added products.
Paulo Gonçalves, APPICAPS’ Communication Director, says that although these companies are small in size, they produce extremely high quality leather. The association has been receiving an increasing number of requests to participate in promotional actions abroad; in mature markets such as Italy or potential markets such as the U.S. and Colombia.
