Wollsdorf Leder’s production process CO2-neutral

Wollsdorf Leder, a major supplier of automotive leathers, excels in the optimal usage of natural resources such as water, energy and other raw materials.

In recent years, the tannery has been actively engaged in water consumption reduction through various production optimisations. Energy consumption has been significantly reduced, resulting in a total annual saving of nearly 1 gigawatt hour of electricity.

Since 2013, the company’s CO2 emissions were lowered to 50% below the benchmark of the leather industry by using only renewable energies such as water and wind. Future sustainability plans aim at saving, approximately, 3.5 gigawatt hours.

In 2014, Wollsdorf Leather introduced optimised desulphidation; the desulphurisation of wastewater through a chemical process, reducing energy consumption and improving odour emissions, and, in 2015, it converted the drying facility from steam to infrared, a completely new

technology in leather production. Cooling facilities were also energy-optimised.

The tannery will be CO2-netural in 2016 and is currently working on the introduction of an action plan with government authorities for further improvement of odour emissions.

“For years we have used various measures to reduce our ecological footprint as much as possible, and we are delighted to be the first tannery in Austria to claim CO2-neutrality for our production process,” said Andreas Kindermann, Managing director, Wollsdorf Leder.

Furthemore, the company is supporting the Austrian “Rain Forest Association” project, which involves the purchase and protection of rain forests in Costa Rica. The project incorporates re-forestation of cleared areas, hiring of gamekeepers, protection of wildcats, sustainable tourism and tropical research based on the purchase of 40 km2 of rain forest and its integration in a national park.
