The Hazaribagh tanneries’ appeal to suspend the daily fine established by the High Court for failing to relocate the tanneries to Savar has been accepted by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court stated that until July 17 the High Court order that requested all 154 tanneries still operational in Hazaribagh to pay a daily compensation of TDK50,000 (US$637) for damaging the environment would be suspended.

The order was passed by the Supreme Court following a petition filed by the Tannery and Finished Leather Exporters Association, which said most tanneries were going to be severely affected by the High Court order. Of the 154 factories concerned, around 60 are said to be large and medium sized tanneries. Read more here.
