A two-tier tanning industry

Article first published in ILM May-June 2016 edition. During late June I found myself on two very different but both equally interesting trips. They provided me with, maybe, a glimpse into where and what the leather industry of the future may look like. On each trip, it became more apparent than ever that in the future there will be two-tier leather industry. One based on technology and mechanisation for the wealthier tanners, and another based on a new breed of SME tannery entrepreneurs from the developing world opening up new markets and creating wealth.
