There has never been more attention on upstream chemical use. Michael Costello, Director of Sustainability at Stahl will deliver a presentation on the new chemical technologies that are being introduced in the beamhouse, tanning, retanning and finishing steps of leather processing at the upcoming “Leather and Sustainability in Retail” conference taking place in London.

ILM and BLC Leather Technology Centre have teamed-up once again following a successful conference in 2015 to organise the second “Leather and Sustainability in Retail” conference in London. The conference is aimed at bringing the latest environmental sustainability and best practices in the leather supply chain to leather oriented brands and retailers.

Michael Costello of Stahl will discuss these new technologies which are designed specifically to allow the tanners to reduce their environmental footprint at each step in the process, whether it be via improved water effluent COD/BOD levels, biodegradable products, reduced water consumption, reduced weight, compliance to MRSLs and the use of renewable plant-based raw materials.  The chemical industry is investing much of its research into these technologies.

Other topics on the agenda will include:

  • Breakthrough traceability technology presented by Applied DNA Sciences.
  • Kering, a world leader in luxury apparel and accessories with sport and lifestyle activities, will present its sustainability program, featuring its sports brand, PUMA.
  • A presentation on 'Animal Welfare Best Practice & Global Challenges' from Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board.
  • James Bell, Sustainability lead at BLC Leather Technology Centre Ltd will deliver a presentation on Supply Chain Mapping.
  • Sarah Swenson of leading global footwear upper and leather goods tanners, PrimeAsia will also outline the company’s industry leading environmental policies.
