The Ethiopian House of Peoples' Representatives has passed a revised Raw Hides, Skins & Hides Marketing Proclamation during its ninth regular session on December 19.

Details of what the law means and how it will be implemented on the ground are unclear at this moment.

The law is said to streamline the raw hides and skins trading process and strengthen quality improvements for hides and skins.

According to the proclamation, the law is aimed at targeting the existing challenges in the supply chain and improve the quality of leather. It also aims to expand a modern fair trade system in the country.

The revised law will limit the number of people involved in the marketing process with no contribution to the supply chain, to reduce prices.

The new proclamation was passed with a unanimous vote.
