The turnover of French leather producers for footwear and leather goods during the first half of 2013 was positive as total revenues were up 3%. French production of shoes and other footwear increased by 14% during the same period.
The results are also positive for exports with the total amount of sales of footwear were worth €985 million and leather goods were valued at €2.371 billion. An increase of 5% and 2% respectively.
However, problems relating to raw material supplies persist in France as hides and skins available for slaughter continue to decline. Demand remains greater than supply and the prices of raw and finished skins remain high.
In addition, the slowdown in consumption of meat is accompanied by a reduction in slaughter for all animals. Domestic slaughter of cattle, calves and sheep decreased by 5%, 4% and 2% respectively.
