The bill to declare the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) an institution of national importance has been approved by Congress. During the voting session, questions arose with regards to the implications of cow protectionism over the domestic hide supply.
Seven FDDIs are said to be already established across the country and another five are to be set up. According to local media, the aim of the bill is “to make the FDDI an institution of national importance for the promotion and development of quality and excellence in education, research and training in all disciplines relating to footwear and leather product design”.
Providing trained manpower and updated technology in accordance with the needs of branded leather goods, students graduating from these institutes have a high rate of recruitment, India’s Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told members of Congress. The courses are self-financed and the costs of admission are judged as quite high, however, the prospects of landing on a “very good job” are said to compensate the financial effort.
