Four employees of a tannery, Kano Tan Nigeria Limited, located on the Challawa Industrial Area of Kano State died and another one was reported unconscious, early morning on January 23, as they tried to clear debris that blocked the company’s water treatment plant.

A witness said the company, due to the blockage of the water treatment plant, could no longer treat the waste water from the tanning process. The water was therefore released into the main drainage in the area.

He stated that the company ordered for the clearing of the treatment plant, following a directive by the Kano State Ministry of Environment. The ministry asked the company to desist from releasing the polluted water into the drainage. The ministry was said to have got wind of the company’s actions from people in the area who formally complained about the stench from the polluted water.

According to employees at the tannery, three of their colleagues lost their lives while trying to rescue the first victim. The second went the same way, the third, the fourth while the fifth survived but remained unconscious.

All the victims were taken to a nearby hospital where the doctor on duty after examining the bodies certified them dead. They were later taken to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital for further examination.

The personnel manager of the company, Musa Ali Mai-Doki, said the firm would compensate the families of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command gave the names of the victims as Sale Abdullahi Gansau, Ibrahim Isa Gadama, Dahiru Abdullahi Diga and Ado Mohammed Panshekara.
