Michael Costello, Director of Sustainability for Stahl, will be presenting ‘Cleaning up the Ganges: A Public Private Partnership for the Kanpur Leather Cluster’ at the upcoming Leather & Sustainability in Retail conference taking place in central London on November 16.

The Ganges river basin in northern India is one of the most polluted and overused river basins in the world. The Government of India started the “Clean Ganga” project several decades ago with the aim to rejuvenate the river basin by reducing pollution levels and improving water quality. The Kanpur Unnao leather cluster is one of the polluting industries surrounding the river and a major challenge has been to establish effective cooperation between the public water authorities responsible for effluent treatment and the small, medium and large-scale tanning companies, who are responsible for reducing the pollution loads.

Stahl’s presentation will introduce the partnership it has established with lead project sponsor, Solidaridad Asia, together with non-profit business advisor PUM Netherlands, as well as the Uttar Pradesh Leather Industry Association and the Ganges Pollution Control Unit, to address some of the challenges related to overall water use and pollution in the Kanpur leather cluster.

Michael Costello has been Stahl’s Director of Sustainability since October 2015 and has a broad experience in the chemical industry in a variety of positions.

The confirmed conference agenda will also include the following presentations:

  • Modern Slavery: The Importance of Transparency, by Chris Grayer, Next Holdings, followed by a ‘Modern Slavery Act Update’
  • Full Traceability in Cattle Supply Chains: New Opportunities in Brazil by Nathalie Walker, National Wildlife Federations
  • Product Passport: Transparency in Chemistry, by Pim Wilgenburg, Smit & zoon
  • ZDHC:  The Implementation Experience by Frank Michel, ZDHC.
  • Introducing ChemMAP: a new system to verify upstream chemical formulations, by Peter Gregory, Vert-Tex

As well as the presentations, there will also be a discussion panel featuring representatives from TFL, LVMH and others to be confirmed.

Jointly organised by BLC and International Leather Maker, the Leather & Sustainability in Retail Conference 2017 is sponsored by Stahl, Smit & zoon, and TFL, and supported by Lonza.
