According to the Department of Foreign Trade, exports of Brazilian hides, skins and leather reached US$248 million in February 2014, which was a new monthly record and an increase of 31.3% compared with the same month last year.
The extremely positive performance of Brazilian leather sales to export markets has been significant for the total Brazilian trade balance in the past few months, says the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). The Executive Secretary of MDIC, Ricardo Schaefer, has emphasised the importance of leather within the Ministry’s goals and objectives for 2014.
José Fernando Bello, Executive President of the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industries (CICB), says that a number of promotions have been put in place in order to surpass the numbers of exports and exceed the sector’s economic expectations. “Commercial promotion of the sector at an international level has provided concrete results for Brazilian tanneries and the country’s economy”, says Bello.
The news regarding the new record of leather exports comes just before two important trade fairs – Fimec, which takes place March 18-21 in Novo Hamburgo, and APLF MM&T in Hong Kong, March 31–April 2. This year Brazil is the Focus Country and a series of marketing and sales initiatives are on the agenda for the Hong Kong show.
A total of 35 Brazilian tanneries will attend the APLF this year.comments powered by Disqus
