At the World Leather Congress in Shanghai last August, I went on record that the major international Internet businesses were collecting and using data at a speed, and in a volume, that made them look like villains rather than the dominant paragons of customer service that they suggest. They represent a new class of business where knowledge and intangibles are more important than plant and equipment and physical assets.
