Three new tanneries have joined the Brazilian Leather Certification of Sustainability (CSCB) programme; Santa Croce, Real Nelore and Curtume Santo Antônio.

The three tanneries are reported to have begun to work on all 173 criteria of the CSCB's programme such as water and energy consumption, restricted substances, productive performance, and residue management. Focussing on long-term sustainability and competitiveness, Rodrigo Rodrigues, Commercial Director, Curtume Santa Croce, said the certification “will add control and management tools" to the business.

Supported by the Brazilian Leather project of the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), the CSCB comprises four levels: Bronze, for tanneries that meet 50% of the applicable requirements in each of the four dimensions of certification, Silver (75%), Gold (90%), and Diamond (100%). So far, two Brazilian tanneries have been certified since its launch: Fuga Couros (Silver) and Courovale by BCM (Gold).
