Heusch, a leading manufacturer of shaving and fleshing blades, now offers tanners the possibility for shaving trials on a special, customised shaving machine at the company’s headquarters in Aachen, Germany.
When it comes to perfect shaving, options for tanners are varied and several factors have to be considered, starting with the type of hide (bovine, sheep, goat, others), the pre-shaving process (wet-white, wet-blue or vegetable tanning) and the shaving application (dry shaving or sole leather). The tanner has also to consider the volume of shavings and density to decide on the best blade and the perfect machine settings in order to yield the highest quality leather.
If the best blade type (tool steel, extra hardened steel or stainless steel) is chosen there are multiple options for grinding wheels. For every shaving process there is only one ‘best’ combination of blade and grinding wheel. The grinding wheels are defined by the wheel’s compound (Bakelite or ceramic) and the roughness of the wheel’s surface.
After the right combination of blade and grinding wheel has been identified, a variety of machine settings has to be applied. These settings are important for the life-span of the blade and leather quality. Machine parameters such as rotary speed of the shaving cylinder, speed of the grinding wheel, grinding interval, in-feed or advance of the grinding wheel have to be established.
Thomas Schaefer, Managing Director, Heusch explains: “Interested tanners are welcome to book a trial on our shaving machine for conducting their individual shaving tests. Our engineers will be happy to assist in the trials until the best solution is identified.”
All machine axles are servo controlled and sensor equipped to allow seamless variation of the parameter settings. Only after the best combination of blade, grinding wheel and machine setting is identified will the Heusch application engineers be satisfied. Tanners can then use the data for their in-house shaving process. They will be assured that their shaving process will meet top quality standards.
