Leather exports up by a third

The value of Brazilian hides and skins exported in March were worth US$252.56 million, an increase of 31.9% in comparison to the same month last year, when exports reached a total of US$191.5 million. Compared with February 2014, there was also an increase of 1.0%.

José Fernando Bello, Executive President of the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industry (CICB), says that there are a few challenges ahead for the Brazilian tanning industry regarding leather exports. Among these Bello underlines the current currency situation, which harms companies’ competitiveness, and the exclusion of Brazil from the EU’s Generalised System of Preferences (GSP).
