One of the keynote presenters during an upcoming free-to-watch webinar will be Stephen Sothmann, President, U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA) who will present: “Understanding your Leather Supply Chain: U.S. Hides, Skins and Meat Industry Introduction”. The webinar will be broadcast on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 3pm CET (2pm UK).
During his presentation, Sothmann will provide an overview of the U.S. raw materials (hides/skins), semi-processed leather and meat industries, what it produces and its major markets. As well as outlining current trade policies and the structure of one of the world’s leading suppliers of wet salted and wet-blue hides. He will explain how USHSLA members provide tanners with a consistent and transparent supply of materials that meet the standards demanded by major global brands and retailers.
The presentation will also cover an update of the U.S.-China trade dispute and its impact on the hide and leather industries, as well as overview on animal welfare and branding practices, and traceability; correcting some of the misinformation about the industry and the steps it is taking to ensure improved hide quality.

About Stephen Sothmann
Stephen Sothmann is the President of the U.S. Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA). In this role, Sothmann represents and promotes the interests of the U.S. hides and skins industry before a wide-range of stakeholders, including U.S. and foreign governments, industry trade associations, media outlets, and other organisations related to global leather production and trade.
Prior to joining USHSLA, Stephen Sothmann worked as a member of the legislative staff of Senator Evan Bayh in the U.S. Senate, covering a broad range of economic issues including international trade and agriculture. A native of Indiana, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Purdue University, a Master of Business Administration from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, and a Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
Who is the webinar aimed at?
The “Understanding the raw materials market for leather” webinar is aimed at anyone connected with the global leather supply chain from brands and retailers, tanners, traders, consultants, associations, academia and industry suppliers. The aim is to give an overview of the raw materials market (hides and skins) and provide more information about recent industry trends and prices, key supply markets such as the U.S., animal welfare, traceability and trackability of materials as well as uncovering some of mysteries of how the market operates and some of the commonly used terminology.
