Sustainability Conference discusses emerging risks to leather sector

Held in Hong Kong on March 14, the 15th Sustainability in the Leather Supply Chain Conference discussed the emerging risks to the sector, including increasingly stringent legislation for chemicals and how consumer perceptions of leather as a material impact on the long-term future of the industry.

The conference was hosted by Eurofins | BLC and trade show organisers, APLF. Presentations included Eric Poles, Global Leather BU Sales Director, Silvateam, who presented the sustainability of the Company’s production and its tannins, and Dorothea Flockert, Global Project Manager Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability, Deichmann, who explained how the footwear brand is working on chemical compliance for leather. Michael Costello, Director of Sustainability, Stahl, examined the views that young consumers hold on leather as a material and how their consumer perceptions are changing the marketplace, and Fernando Bellese of JBS Couros presented its new sustainable leather range ‘Kind Leather’. The event concluded with a discussion panel.
