Michael Costello, Director of Sustainability at chemical specialist Stahl, will host the second of three high-profile presentations in the upcoming free ILM webinar ‘Traceability in the leather supply chain - Part III’, to be held on July 10.

Stahl recently announced an MoU with New York based company Applied DNA Sciences around the concept of using molecular tagging as a way to improve traceability in product supply chains. This presentation introduces the DNA marking technology and describes how it could work in the leather manufacturing process. The DNA can be introduced to the leather process via an aqueous carrier and authentication of the DNA-containing leather can be achieved with simple swab tests and patented portable detection devices which upload information to a centralized database. The benefits for industry of using DNA tags in this way are also discussed, as well as some of the challenges that the rigors of leather processing may pose.
