A livestock products company in Rumuruti area of Laikipia county is planning to build a Sh210 million (US$2.4 million) “organic” leather tannery. Ngare Narok Meat Industries Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi said the construction is to be funded by the Climate Innovation Centre.
He said the plan is to see the company engage in tanning using environmentally friendly methods. “Unlike other companies that use chemicals, ours is a unique process that will use herbs that persevere harsh climatic conditions and can be grown in Laikipia county whose climate is dry,” Ndiritu said. He was speaking to the press in Nyahururu town on May 27.
Ndiritu said the machinery to be used in the plant are made under the auspices of Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute KIRDI. "The buildings will be put up after the machines are completed and approved by the government," he said.comments powered by Disqus
