Leather institute alumni association formed

A new industry former student association in India was officially formed on June 14 following a meeting at the CLRI in Chennai. The new association is formed from alumni from the Chennai Institute of Leather Technology.

The Alumni Association of Institute of Leather Technology in Chennai was inaugurated at the Triple Helix Auditorium, CLRI Campus, Adyar in the presence of Padma Bhushan Dr. T Ramasami, Former Secretary Department of Science and Technology & Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, New Delhi, Padma Shri Janab M. Rafeeque Ahmed, President All India Skins and Hides Tanners and Merchants Association & FIEO, Prof. Dr. AB. Mandal, Director CSIR – Central Leather Research Institute, V Kamalakannan, Principal, Institute of Leather Technology and K R Vijayan, President, Indian Shoe Federation.  The Institute, which was established in 1915 is continuously educating and developing leather technologists and entrepreneurs. The association members unanimously elected Shri N. Shafeeq Ahmed as Founder President, Shri. V. John Sundar as Founder Secretary and Shri. K R Munikannan as Founder Treasurer.

The objectives of association include:

  • To share dynamics of leather technology changes with stakeholders & students linking R&D and academia.
  • To disseminate experience & expertise through a network of technologists
  • To facilitate gaining professional leadership in the chosen area of the leather technology

The association has about 500 members spanning various generations comprising students between 1960 and 2013 from ILT.
