The event took place in Brazil, November 20-21 and was co-organised by the Centre for the Brazilian Tanning Industries (CICB).
José Fernando Bello, Executive President of CICB, outlined the country’s Lei do Couro (“Leather Law”). In Brazil, since 1965 there is a law that prohibits the use of expressions such as “synthetic leather” or “eco-leather” within the country.

During 2013, CICB has been promoting the awareness of the law to manufacturers, retailers, consumers and the media to obtain a better understanding of the law and its possible consequences. Throughout the year CICB has not only been distributing educational material but has been monitoring brands and publications about the correct use of the word “leather”.

Congress delegates included tanning industry executives, technicians and representatives from several brands and governmental departments. It is one of the most important events of the leather sector in Brazil. The 20th National Congress of Technicians and Chemists of the Leather Industry was an initiative of ABQTIC and was co-organised with CICB.
