Initially targeting 300 small companies and SMEs in the clothing and design, industrial technology, food and beverage sectors, the “Made in Italy Pavilion” is said to concern a permanent exhibition of Italian products, which is to be made available to buyers worldwide. A study by Italian consulting company Prometeia has shown that the SMEs are the backbone of the Italian economy, with around 5.3 million companies employing over 15 million people. Luigi Di Maio, Italy’s Foreign Minister, said he is confident that the Italian companies “will not only be up to the task, but will realise this was a necessary and easy step to take”. During the virtual presentation, Rodrigo Cipriani Foresio, Southern Europe General Manager, Alibaba Group, said the pandemic “has taught us that we need to speed up the process of digitalisation.”
