The trend appears to mark a reversal of the plant-based boom that peaked in 2021, when around 10% of the population identified as vegetarian or vegan. That figure has since fallen to about 7%, while the proportion of meat-eaters has risen.

Experts say worries over adequate protein intake and the nutritional value of some ultra-processed vdegan foods are key factors behind the change. Survey data suggests more than half of office workers have increased their consumption of meat and fish in the past year, with one in four former vegetarians abandoning the diet altogether.

Industry data presented by The Times also points to a more flexible approach to eating. Sales of fully vegetarian meal kits have declined, while individual vegetarian dishes remain popular, indicating a rise in “flexitarian” diets that combine plant-based meals with occasional meat or fish.
