The Labour Information Management System (LIMS) will record the information of workers from around 10,000 companies, with labour identification numbers (LIDs) provided to around 300,000 people during the pilot.

The Ministry has prioritised five formal sectors during the pilot – tanning, ready-made garments, tea gardens, pharmaceuticals and ship breaking.

Labour Secretary Ehsan-e-Elahi told The Financial Express: “A complete database of workers is an immediate need for our ministry, as it is not possible to take any plan on the labour sector without knowing the number of workers.”

Developing the database is one of the requirements set forth by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the European Union (EU) and would be an important step towards the government’s target eliminating child labour by 2025.
