Brazil’s leather sector calendar kicks off the year with two trade events that take place almost simultaneously. The 44th edition of Couromoda, the International Shoe, Leather Goods and Accessories Fair, takes place January 15-18 in Sao Paulo, and inaugurates a fresh working year for the Brazilian footwear industry. However, Inspiramais, the design and innovation exhibition organised by Assintecal (the Brazilian Association of Companies of Components for Leather, Footwear and Manufactured Goods) to be held January 16-17, is readily establishing itself as a key meeting place for tanners and manufacturers alike.

If Couromoda has changed venues and integrated São Paulo’s Prêt-à-Porter, the trade show for the fashion and accessories industry, to strengthen the link between the sectors and benefit from the synergy, some from the leather industry seem to think the event is losing its attractiveness, while Inspiramais, which expects to generate over US$2 million in business over the two days, is better adapted to their needs. Further, Couromoda also faces competition from Expo Riva Schuh taking place in Italy on January 14-17, where a number of Brazilian companies are exhibiting.

18 tanners from 5 different Brazilian states are participating at the January 2017 edition of Inspiramais. Innovative products showcased include bovine leather, goatskin, sheepskin and exotic leathers. The ‘Leather Preview’ area of the show will focus on the Autumn/Winter 2018 trends and lead visitors through unique applications on suede, vacuum, fish and snake, among others. A seminar will also be held by the Brazilian Leather Sustainability programme (CSCB).

Further on into spring, Fimec, the international trade fair for leather, footwear, accessories, chemicals and machinery, will be held March 14-16 in Novo Hamburgo-RS. For this upcoming edition, visitors will be offered a daily visit to Senai (the Institute for Leather Technology and Environment) to experience the live processing of leather, with the latest technology and machinery.

Finally, the 49th edition of Francal, the international shoe and accessories fashion fair, takes place July 2-5 in São Paulo. The 2016 registered around 35,000 trade visitors from 46 countries, according to the organisers.
