According to StatisticsCanada, clothing stores suffered double-digit sales declines in November compared with 2019. Shoe retail is reported to have been hit the hardest, recording a 19.5% decline year-on-year, while clothing and accessories dropped 13.9%. Sporting goods, home improvement, furniture and food sales saw double-digit growth. Furniture sales rose 23.7% as more people stayed home.

Sector-wide sales are reported to have risen at their fastest pace since September, up 1.3% over the previous month for a total of CA$55.2 billion (US$43.4 billion), according to StatisticsCanada, whose data shows that excluding petrol stations and automotive sales, growth was even higher, at 2.6%.
