Many tannery machine process variables have been extensively investigated by academics and supplier companies serving the leather industry for decades with the purpose of improving design or problem-solving. Today, most of these variables are generally well known.

However, other hidden variables in the leather making process that automotive tanners see daily effecting their leather are often assumed to be associated with other known variables or remain unexplained.
Karl Flowers, Consultant, will be presenting on behalf of Italian tannery machinery specialists, Erretre/Fratelli Carlessi/IST Innovation Centre during the conference. The company has been investigating machine variables for drying, stretching, conditioning, finishing (including spraying), finish drying and milling (including chemical milling).

Attempts to control hidden variables are often performed by changing the known variables with often futile results, that could either have no effect, or could result in inconsistent lucky fixes. In his presentation, Karl Flowers will outline details of groundbreaking research to develop tools to identify hidden variables. He will also invite companies in the automotive leather supply chain to join in a combined industry effort to identify and create further tools to reduce such variables and provide greater process consistency to make more natural and uniform vehicle leather interiors.
