The court has ruled that three Chinese companies (Zheng Chaosong, Xinpingheng and Bosidake) pay US$1.5 million in copyright damages over New Balance’s famous “N” logo. The similarity of the logos and other details led the judges to conclude that the counterfeit products could be “easily confused” with the authentic shoes.

The court’s decision comes at a time when U.S. President Donald Trump accused China of being negligent on counterfeiting issues and announced he was to launch as investigation into China’s record on intellectual property.

Established in China since 1995, New Balance’s stake of the Chinese footwear market increased from 0.4% in 2011 to 1.8% in 2016, behind the Nike and Adidas sportwear brands that are reported to hold 7.8% and 7% respectively, according to consultancy Euromonitor.
