Anna Sacks, who runs a series of sustainable fashion focused social media accounts, posted a TikTok showing off slashed and ripped bags she recovered before they were disposed of, and claimed that they were destroyed so that the brand could claim back tax money for unsold damaged items.

Coach has issued an apology on its social media accounts, where it claims it has ceased all destruction of returned goods and said: “We always strive to do better and we are committed to leading with purpose and embracing our responsibility as a global fashion brand to effect real and lasting change for our industry.”

The response on social media has been cold, with many accusing the brand of only making a change in response to being caught out and that the apology was performative.
