Organised and financed by Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium), the winner of the sixth edition of Craft the Leather is Heleen Sintobin from London’s Central Saint Martins, UK, for her ‘The Tartufo Collection’. Ten students, from different international fashion and design institutes of excellence around the globe, participated in Craft the Leather 2017, with each student designing and producing an original collection in Tuscan veg-tanned leather, ranging from furniture, jewellery, and clothing to footwear and accessories.

The second and third place were attributed to Takumi Yoshida from Hiko Mizuno College of Jewellery in Japan, and Chantal Maes from SASK Sint Niklaas in Belgium, respectively. The collections that were displayed at the Consortium’s stand at Lineapelle were voted by a panel of experts comprised of a creative director, a fashion editor, shoe designers, a tanning technician and a research studio. Visitors at the fair and online consortium’s followers were also invited to vote.

The five criteria considered by the Jury concerned design inspired by qualities intrinsic to veg-tan leather, innovative use of veg-tan leather, excellent aesthetics, craftsmanship, and story-telling of the collection. Over 1,000 ballots were cast by the professional community visiting the fair, according to the organisers.
