In his presentation titled ‘Ethical sourcing strategies in the U.S. leather supply chain’, Sothmann outlines the need for closer collaboration between tanners and U.S. hide, beef and cattle stakeholders and provides a roadmap to achieving more effective partnerships. He also explains why due diligence in the leather supply chain is increasingly necessary and how successful traceability and animal welfare programmes as well as supply chain mapping can be used to unlock new marketing initiatives to promote leather and improve the narrative surrounding it.

Stephen Sothmann is the President of the LHCA. In this role, he represents and promotes the interests of the U.S. hides and skins industry before a wide-range of stakeholders, including U.S. and foreign governments, industry trade associations, media outlets, and other organisations related to global leather production and trade. A native of Indiana, he received a Bachelor of Arts from Purdue University, a Master of Business Administration from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, and a Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
