Carla was one of five sisters who transformed the family leather goods business into an eponymous luxury fashion house. Fendi was founded by Adele and Edoardo Fendi, Carla’s parents, in 1925. Their five daughters, Paola, Anna, Franca, Carla and Alda, nicknamed ‘the five fingers of the hand’, became involved in the family business bringing new energy and ideas.

In 1965, they invited Karl Lagerfeld to join the house as a designer. Under Lagerfeld’s direction, Fendi became one of the most famous furriers in the world. In the 1990’s, Fendi helped revolutionise leather handbags by making them softer and less rigid. Fendi’s niece, Silvia Venturini Fendi, invented the famous ‘Fendi baguette bag’ inspired in shape by the traditional French loaf.
