International Leather Maker is pleased to announce that it is organising its next edition of the “ILM Automotive Leather Supply Chain” conference in the Bavarian capital city of Munich.

Following the success of last year’s event which was held in Paris, ILM chose Munich as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities with excellent transport links and a close proximity to the German automotive industry, the largest in the European continent.

The half-day (afternoon) conference will take place at the 5-star, Bayerischer Hof luxury hotel in the centre of the city. The conference will be held on Monday, May 22 and will take place in the hotel’s elegant Königssaal room.

Speakers will include representatives from the whole automotive leather supply chain including leading tanners, tier-1 suppliers and OEMs. There will also be opportunities for networking.

The conference is aimed at anyone connected with the global automotive leather supply chain from hides/skins suppliers, chemicals and machinery suppliers, research and academic institutes, traders, tanners, tier-1 suppliers and automotive OEMs.

All presentations will be in English and the conference is lead sponsored by global leather chemical makers, Stahl and TFL. Auto leather tannery machinery specialists Erretre are a sponsor and cutting solutions provider Zünd are an event supporter.

Announcements on further speakers and topics will be revealed on this website in the coming weeks.

Record sales figures for premium and luxury automotive brands

A recent report by Bain & Co said the personal luxury goods market was largely flat in 2016, declining from €251 billion in 2015 to €249 billion in 2016, revealing a “new normal” where consumers tend to favour personal experiences as opposed to physical product purchases, with the exception of the automotive market. The premium and luxury automotive market saw the strongest growth in 2016, up 8% thanks to the strong performance of premium cars, especially in China.

The report findings are backed up recent sales figures released by BMW Group, Volvo, Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) and Jaguar Land Rover who all reported record sales in 2016. Estimates suggest that approximately two-thirds of all cars made by the premium brands contain a part or complete leather interior and that figure rises to over 95% for lower volume, but higher valued top-end luxury marques such as Rolls-Royce, Maybach or Bentley.

The automotive leather segment remains the fastest growing sector in the leather industry and the whole supply chain is undergoing a major industry transformation with issues such as environmental sustainability, autonomous driving, electric or hybrid vehicles, digitalization and future mobility all being hotly debated. Where and how does leather fit in with all this future technology? Hopefully, some of these questions will be answered during the next conference.
