The new International Leather Centre is to house the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies (ICLT) of the University of Northampton, the Leather Conservation Centre and an exhibition area.

Aiming to become a cultural hub, the project will cost a total of £13 million (US$18.79 million), of which £5 million (US$7.2 million) will be used to create the University’s leathercraft centre.

“The new International Leather Centre being formed in Northampton’s town centre will become the epicentre for leather expertise, addressing the whole of the value chain from the hide to the high street”, said Rachel Garwood, Director, ICLT.

“As well as working with fashion, design, marketing and business within the University, the project will be achieved by close working relationships with other specialised areas within Northampton such as Moulton College, the Leather Conservation Centre, Museum of Leathercraft and, of course, the local leather industry. No one else is positioned to offer this level of expertise worldwide”, added Garwood.

To be completed in 2018, the unique leather cultural hub will be located at the former Vulcan Works site, a historic former iron works building in the heart of Northampton.
