He also stated that the allocation of plots against the name of the tanneries would be cancelled if they continued to refuse to move, he said while replying to a tabled question from an Awami League lawmaker.
“The government will take strict steps to improve the capital’s environment and for public interest,” the Minister said.
The tannery estate has been set up in Savar and Keraniganj on 199.40 acres of land in order to shift the downtown and polluting Hazaribagh tanneries, he added.
Construction work on all infrastructure except the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) and a ‘dumping yard’ have already been completed, the Minister added.
The project will be completely implemented by June 2016, Amu told the parliament.
The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has approved the layout of 152 industrial units out of the total of 155 units earmarked for the new tannery cluster. Construction of 148 industrial units has started, he said.
