Punjab Environment Secretary Muhammad Anwar Rasheed has assured the business community that the next phase of the Sialkot tannery zone would be fast-tracked and it would be provided will all the basic facilities.
He expressed the views in a meeting with Sialkot-based tanners and leather goods manufacturers and exporters at Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) on September 21.
Chairman Sialkot Dry Port Trust Muhammad Ishaq Butt, President Sialkot Tanners Association Naveed Iqbal Sheikh, Project Manager Muhammad Atif, acting Commissioner Gujranwala division Tariq Mehmood Malik, DCO Sialkot Iftikhar Ali Sahu and President Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) Sheikh Abdul Majid were also present.
The secretary said the provincial government was making an all-out effort to ensure maximum protection of the environment. He said previous notices issued to Sialkot tanneries could not be withdrawn because they were now under trial in the Environment Tribunal Court at Lahore.
He directed the acting Commissioner Gujranwala and the Sialkot DCO to speed up the pace of construction of the Sialkot tannery zone.
The tanners expressed grave concern over the issuance of legal notices and their trial in the tribunal court, urging the government to withdraw the notices, adding that all tanneries would be shifted to the tannery zone after the completion of the project.
