Job losses at Fontanellas y Marti

Spanish tanners, Fontanellas y Marti have made a number of production staff redundant at their tannery and company headquarters in Igualada, Spain sources have told ILM. The company intend to shift manufacturing to the company’s tannery in Vietnam. 

It is understood that around 60 of the company’s 120 staff in Spain have been made redundant. It is reported that the company are winding down or stopping leather production in Spain.

One ILM source said that one of their main customers, US luxury goods maker, Coach requested that Fontanellas shift production to their modern tannery in Vietnam. However, this has not been confirmed by the company.

The tannery in Igulada was founded in 1954 and is famous for producing high-end vegetable tanned ‘Taniflex’ leathers for luxury leather goods and footwear upper. They also produce a range of chrome retanned articles on cow hide and have in recent years developed the tannery with full automation and process controls.

ILM contacted Fontanellas y Marti for a comment but they did not respond.
