Vellore tannery workers threaten to strike

Published:  01 September, 2013

The Federation of Trade Unions of Leather Tannery Workers (CITU) in the Vellore district of Southern India are set to stage a token strike on September 2, seeking higher wages, bonuses, allowances and housing allowance.

According to M P Ramachandran, district secretary of the CITU, earlier the union had participated in ten rounds of tripartite talks with the labour officials in Chennai. Then the tannery owners had refused to relent to many of their demands. The unions had announced earlier that they would launch an indefinite strike on July 30 and a notice in this regard was also issued to the tanneries. However, on July 25 the strike call was withdrawn following requests from tannery owners as they would be busy with the Ramzan fasting.
