SLG to outline JLR blockchain project at digital auto leather forum

At the upcoming ILM Automotive Leather Supply Chain Digital Forum, Dr Warren Bowden of the Scottish Leather Group (SLG) will delve into the details of the organisation’s efforts in circularity, its collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and more.

Dr Bowden will discuss the ongoing digital supply chain project with Jaguar Land Rover Circulor, and University of Nottingham. He will also cover the other important industry topics such as traceability, circularity, carbon footprints and modern types of tannage with a holistic theme around sustainability. His presentation is titled: "JLR partnership in world-first trial with blockchain technology for leather supply chain traceability."

About the speaker

Dr Warren Bowden is a Chartered Environmentalist, Director of Sustainability and Innovation at the Scottish Leather Group. A Fellow of the Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists and inventor of the pioneering and patented thermal energy plant. Dr Bowden has spent the past 18 years of his 25-year career within the sector leading the sustainability agenda toward net-zero through circularising leather manufacturing. Additionally, Dr Bowden is a circular “ambassador” and Director of Leather UK.

Scottish Leather Group is the largest producer of leather in the UK, specialising in the sustainable manufacture of upholstery leathers, for automotive, aeronautical, mass transit and other leather goods markets. The group is based at the Bridge of Weir site, and markets products under the brands “Bridge of Weir” and “Muirhead”.

During the Automotive Leather Supply Chain Forum, Dr Bowden will be joined by presenters from other key automotive stakeholders and leather industry experts to speak on a variety of hot topics affecting the automotive leather sector today. The virtual event will take place over 2.5 hours and will include a virtual coffee break and feature a total of six presentations + live Q&A and panel discussions.

Topics will include:

  • Growth projections, opportunities, threats and key automotive trends affecting auto leather stakeholders
  • The use of traceability and blockchain in the leather supply chain and the benefits for OEMs
  • The use of new innovative low impact leather chemicals and chemicals from renewable carbon sources in modern automotive leather

Following the presentations, the speakers will be invited to take part in a Q&A and discussion session with ILM Content Director Martin Ricker around the following question: What can be done to persuade car brands that leather is really the sustainable material of the future for next generation interiors? Attendee questions will also be addressed.
