British fashion brand Stella McCartney has announced the launch of what it calls the “first-ever luxury bag crafted from mycelium”.

The “Frayme Mylo” will be available from July 1 and will be constructed from mushroom biomaterial from biotechnology company Bolt Threads specifically as an alternative to leather.

Dan Widmaier, founder and CEO of Bolt Threads, said: “It’s been an honour to partner so closely with Stella and her team as they break new ground in luxury fashion with Mylo.

“Their category defining leadership of animal-free fashion and championship of sustainable materials is paving a path forward towards a more responsible fashion industry. Bringing the first-ever luxury bag made from Mylo to market is a massive milestone for conscientious consumers, the biomaterials industry, and the future of luxury fashion.”

ILM reported earlier this year that Stella McCartney’s business has made a loss over the past two years despite its millionaire owner increasing her own net wealth and while many of the company’s employees were furloughed due to the pandemic and supported by tax payers.
