An expert from the Italian Leather Research Institute (SSIP) will speak at an ILM Automotive Leather Supply Chain conference in Milan on optimising tanning processes for auto leathers.

Dr Marco Nogarole, Business Services Manager at Arzignano District, SSIP (Italian Leather Research Institute) will discuss research into optimising wet-white tanning processes.

This research looks at how tanners can optimise processes by verifying the efficacy of tanning in order to allow greater control and rationalisation of chemicals.

Dr Nogarole will discuss how, in the study, the degree of tanning agent fixation and cross-linking effectiveness is assessed by measuring the residual reactivity, as the measurement of the collagen proteins amine groups that have not reacted with the tanning agent.

Additionally, he will discuss another SSIP study which focuses on quantifying the environmental footprint of 1 sq m of finished leather for the automotive sector, in compliance with Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules of Leather and a comparison of the impact of chrome and glutaraldehyde tanned materials.
