A groundbreaking ceremony has taken place at the Sialkot Tannery Zone project in the village of Khambraanwala with the Punjab Secretary Environment Iqbal Muhammad being the guest of honour.
The provincial secretary said that the project had been fast-tracked and would be helpful in relocating tanneries scattered in and around Sialkot city. He added that the government was making efforts to ensure maximum protection of the environment. He said that every citizen was responsible for making steps towards a pollution-free environment. He reviewed the progress of project, saying that early completion of the project would be helpful in controlling environmental pollution caused by tanneries. The Punjab government is establishing a Sialkot Tannery Zone on 400 acres of land near Sialkot, where total 554 plots of different sizes had yet to be allotted.
The project first began in 2009 by relocating 264 small, medium and larger scale tanneries from Sialkot city to reduce environmental pollution in the urban areas. However, it has taken five years for the construction of new road infrastructure which will be completed by the end of 2015. The project director said it was the first of its kind in Pakistan and is located on 400 acres of land near the village Khambraanwala. The chief executive asked the relocating companies ensure early payments of their arrears in order to speed up the transfer process.
