There has never been more attention on upstream chemical use. Mike Tomkins from Stahl, a lead sponsor for this must-attend conference, will address this subject when he speaks on Alternative Chemistries.
There is a general desire for leather to be seen to be as natural as possible. However, with no clear definition of what this actually means, there is a great deal of confusion. The intention in Stahl’s paper is to explain what chemicals can be used to make leather that will have the least environmental and social impact whilst at the same time making a desirable product that meets all the performance requirements. One example would be the use of resins for retanning and finishing made from bio-based raw materials rather than crude oil based. Another would be to look at different types of tannage for the leather.
Other topics on the agenda at the half-day (afternoon) conference include:
- Animal welfare
- Reducing cutting waste from product manufacture
- Challenges with upstream chemical management
- Moving to a Circular Economy
- Sustainable manufacturing
- Environmental Profit & Loss
