The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Programme (ZDHC) has announced four new contributors committed to the Programme’s vision of widespread implementation of sustainable chemistry to protect consumers, workers and the environment.
The ZDHC Programme, which aims to harmonise standards across the textile and footwear value-chain (including leather) to support safer chemical management, has announced the arrival of four new contributors, which include Netherlands based leather chemical manufacturer, Stahl and leather manufacturer, PrimeAsia.
The other two new contributors to the programme are ADEC Innovations (an impact investing company that designs, develops and delivers diverse data management and technology solutions), and Lanzhou Ketian New Materials (a leading supplier of Chinese waterborne synthetics).
A key component of the ZDHC Programme is its manufacturing restricted substances list (MRSL), which restricts the use of hazardous chemicals used across the manufacturing process.
“As frontrunner in sustainability, we believe it is our responsibility to lower the environmental impact. That is why we are strongly committed to eliminate these substances from our product ranges for apparel and footwear. Therefore, we welcome the updated ZDHC MRSL Version 1.1 for the industry”, said Stahl in a statement.
Launched in 2011 by six leading brands, the ZDHC Programme now consists of 22 signatory brands, 11 value-chain affiliates and four associates. Contributors include apparel and footwear companies such as Burberry, Benneton, Gap, H&M, Inditex, Marks & Spencer, Nike, Puma and Adidas.
Following the success of last year’s Leather and Sustainability in Retails conference where the ZDHC Leather MRSL was formally launched, BLC Leather Technology Centre and International Leather Maker (ILM) are once again organising a half-day conference on Thursday, November 17 at the newly re-opened, Leathersellers’ Livery Hall in the City of London, where Stahl and PrimeAsia will both be speaking.
