At least thirteen people are reported dead following a fire at what is claimed to be an illegal leather garment factory in India.

Thirteen people died in a fire at a suspected illegal garment factory situated in the outskirts of New Delhi, India, in the early hours of November 11 while they were sleeping in the workshop.

The firemen, which are said to have taken two hours to arrive at the scene, reported seeing piles of leather stacked in the building's narrow staircase and cramped workshop.

According to the local police, the fire was most likely caused either by a short circuit or a cigarette. The two building owners have been detained.

The narrow streets of the residential neighbourhood of Sahibabad, situated about 20km east of New Delhi in the Ghaziabad district, are said to be cramped with illegal factories employing underpaid migrant workers.
