Tanneries are among 8,300 companies that were forced to close in the Chinese region of Hebei last year after they were deemed to be polluting the environment.

Some tanneries as well as refineries, electroplating factories and other factories are blamed by Hebei’s local environmental protection bureau and have been forced to close in a crack-down on environmental pollution.

The authorities have taken measures such as cutting the power and water supply to businesses they suspect of polluting. It is understood that a number companies had been established in hidden rural locations to avoid the authorities.
